Everything you need to know about getting around and exploring the area from Villa Amaranta
Driving into the Cinque Terre villages is strongly not recommended. Parking is extremely limited, expensive and usually a steep uphill walk from the village. The best approach is to leave the car at the villa and take a short taxi or bus to La Spezia Centrale station (just 2.5 km away), then board the Cinque Terre Express. Trains run every 15–20 minutes and reach Riomaggiore in just 10 minutes. A Cinque Terre Card from €18 covers unlimited train travel between all five villages plus hiking trail access — perfect for a full day out.
There are three options from Villa Amaranta. By car is the quickest — just 25 minutes via the SP530 (Via Napoleonica). By ferry is the most scenic — ferries depart from La Spezia's Molo Italia terminal (~3 km away) and take around 40 minutes, running several times daily from April to October. By bus is the most economical — ATC bus line 11/P departs from La Spezia city centre and takes approximately 30 minutes to Portovenere.
Pisa International Airport (PSA) is approximately 85 km from Villa Amaranta — around 1 hour by car. It is the most convenient airport, with direct flights from London, Manchester, Edinburgh and most major European cities. Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) is approximately 110 km away — around 1 hour 30 minutes by car. Both airports are also reachable by train via La Spezia Centrale station. Private airport transfers for groups of 12 can be arranged on request — please contact us directly.
Yes — private boat tours are an excellent option for a group of 12. Boats depart from La Spezia Molo Italia ferry terminal (~3 km from the villa) and can cover all five Cinque Terre villages and Portovenere in a single day. This is one of the most memorable ways to experience the coastline and avoids the crowded trains entirely. We can help arrange a private charter directly — please get in touch when booking your stay.
Yes — everything you need is within easy reach. The nearest Conad supermarket is approximately 600 m from the villa. A pharmacy is around 700 m away, a bank and ATM approximately 800 m, and a petrol station about 1 km. Several bus stops are also within 200–300 m for easy access to La Spezia city centre and beyond. Bar Marconi is less than 500 m away — perfect for morning coffee.
The Cinque Terre Card is a day pass covering unlimited train travel between all five villages on the Cinque Terre Express, plus access to the main hiking trails. In 2026 it costs from €18 per person. If you plan to visit more than two villages in a day — which most guests do — the card represents excellent value compared to buying individual tickets at €10 per trip during peak season. Cards can be purchased at La Spezia Centrale station or online via Trenitalia before your visit.
